Regenerative Medicine Q & A

What is regenerative medicine?

Regenerative medicine is the medical discipline dedicated to restoring damaged areas in your body using substances your body produces itself. The two main forms of regenerative medicine are platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy and stem cell therapy.

PRP

PRP uses a certain part of your blood — the platelets — to help you heal tissue that would otherwise heal quite slowly. Your platelets contain a huge supply of growth factors that promote tissue repair, new blood vessel growth, wound healing, and even bone regeneration.

So, PRP therapy gives you a supply of those healing substances that's far larger than what your body normally delivers, right in the specific area where you need it.

Stem cells

Stem cells are blank cells, which means they can turn into any other type of cell. If you've lost tissue due to an injury or breakdown over time, stem cells can come in to help you regrow the exact kind of tissue you need.

Just as with PRP therapy, stem cell therapy places a huge amount of these essential cells in the precise area where they can stimulate the healing you need.

At Ascend Regenerative Medicine, Dr. Mammen uses both PRP and stem cell therapy for a variety of injuries and chronic pain all over the body.

What conditions does regenerative medicine treat?

Regenerative medicine can treat many conditions, including:

Spine problems

Regenerative medicine treats spine problems involving the sacroiliac joints, iliolumbar ligaments, facet joints, and interspinous ligaments.

Shoulder issues

Regenerative medicine treatments can help with shoulder conditions including partial thickness rotator cuff tears, biceps tendinosis, chronic glenohumeral ligament sprains, acromioclavicular joint dysfunction, and levator scapulae tendinosis.

Elbow injuries

Regenerative medicine can treat elbow injuries including tennis elbow, golfer's elbow, ulnar collateral ligament injuries, and partial distal biceps tendon tears.

Wrist and hand problems

Some of the many wrist and hand problems that regenerative medicine can treat effectively include chronic thumb sprains and chronic arthritis.

Hip and pelvis problems

Some of the hip and pelvis area problems that regenerative medicine can treat include piriformis syndrome, greater trochanteric bursitis, sacroiliac joint dysfunction, hamstring strains, ischial tuberosity bursitis, hip arthritis, osteonecrosis in the femoral head, and symphysis pubis pain.

Knee issues

Knee issues that regenerative medicine can treat include patellar tendinitis or tendinosis, Osgood-Schlatter disease, quadriceps strains, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, chondromalacia patella, and enthesopathy

Lower Leg

In the lower leg, regenerative medicine can relieve calf pain.

Ankle and foot

In the ankle and foot areas, regenerative medicine helps with recurring ligament sprains, chronic Achilles tendinosis, recurring partial tendon tears, and plantar fasciitis.

These incredibly impressive uses are only some of the wide-ranging issues PRP and stem cell therapy can treat.

How does regenerative medicine work?

For regenerative medicine treatments, Dr. Mammen uses either blood or bone marrow from your own body. He treats the cells using cutting-edge protocols like EmCyte®, which produces the highest platelet concentration possible (7-9 times what your blood normally has).

Dr. Mammen then uses ultrasound or fluoroscopic guidance to inject the PRP or stem cells exactly where they're most helpful. Over time, you regrow the tissue needed and your pain naturally decreases at the same time.
